Once you've picked a size of SUV for sale in Kenya, the next question is fuel. It sounds technical, but it really comes down to one thing: how and where you drive. A diesel that's perfect for someone doing Nairobi to Eldoret every fortnight can be the wrong choice for someone who never leaves Kilimani.
Here's how to think about it, using the SUVs for sale in Kenya on our own floor.
The short version
| Fuel | Usually suits | Examples in our stock |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel | Long distances, highway trips, heavy loads | Prado Diesel 2,800 cc (KSh 6.6M to 8.1M), CX5 Diesel AWD (KSh 3.3M), Audi Q5 Diesel (KSh 4.7M), Mercedes GLE400d (KSh 11.5M to 13M) |
| Petrol | Mostly town driving, simpler ownership | CX5 Petrol AWD (KSh 3.2M), CX-3 (KSh 2.6M), Harrier (KSh 3.6M+) |
| Petrol turbo | More power from a petrol engine | CX5 Turbo 2,500 cc (KSh 3.35M to 3.4M), Harrier Turbo (KSh 3.65M to 3.7M) |
| Hybrid | Stop-start city traffic | Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2019, 31,000 km (KSh 4.7M) |
Diesel: for the long haul
Diesels shine on long, steady drives and under load: a full family, luggage and a roof box heading upcountry. That's why nearly every Prado we sell is the 2,800 cc diesel.
What to know: diesels prefer regular longer runs. If your car only ever does short trips in traffic, ask yourself whether you really need one.
Petrol: the simple choice for town
Petrol SUVs are often cheaper to buy, and a good fit if most of your kilometres are in Nairobi. Our CX5 Petrol AWD at KSh 3.2M is KSh 100,000 less than the diesel version from the same year.
Petrol turbo: power without diesel
A turbo petrol gives more power from a petrol engine. You'll feel it when overtaking on Thika Road with five people on board. Our 2020 CX5 Turbos (2,500 cc) cost only KSh 50,000 to 100,000 more than the 2019 non-turbo cars. Read Mazda CX5 diesel vs petrol vs turbo for the full comparison.
Hybrid: for stop-start traffic
Hybrids do their best work in exactly the kind of traffic Nairobi has plenty of. Our 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has 31,000 km on it and costs KSh 4.7M. That's KSh 100,000 to 200,000 more than our non-hybrid RAV4s, so ask yourself how much of your driving is crawling traffic.
On any used hybrid, ask about the hybrid system's condition, and make sure no warning lights stay on at start-up.
Three questions to decide
Still unsure? Test drive two fuel types back to back on the same route. The difference is usually obvious within 20 minutes.
Don't forget the bigger picture
Fuel type is one factor. Size, budget and seats matter more. Start with SUVs for sale in Kenya by budget if you haven't narrowed those down yet.
